Terrace of 5 town houses with undercrofts on site of the timber-framed Mainwaring mansion, now a restaurant, shop and offices and 3 flats. 1852. By Edward Hodkinson, probably as architect and developer. Brown Flemish bond brick with stucco, sandstone and blue brick dressings. The rear is of brown brick, possibly partly older than the front. Grey slate roof with main ridge parallel with the street. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys including undercrofts which are rendered; those to Nos 58-64 are altered with, respectively, a small-pane double door with sidelights, two 15-pane fixed lights and a 6-pane fixed light; that to No.66 is unaltered, with boarded double loading doors in a segmental-arched opening, a cast-iron area railing. The round-arched recessed porches, paired to Nos 58 & 60 and Nos 62 & 64, have stucco pilaster cases with moulded imposts and archivolts, 2 apron steps and (from east to west) 5, 5, 6, 6 and 7 internal steps of grey stone to doorways at former Row level; Nos 58 & 66 have bolection-moulded 6-panel doors, Nos 60 & 62 part-glazed panelled doors and No.64 a plate-glass door with an inner glazed 2-panel door. All windows except to undercrofts have blue-brick segmental arches; those to Row-level and 4th storey have moulded stone sills, the third storey a moulded sillband. Nos 58-64 have replaced small-pane fixed lights at former Row level, No.66 has original tripartite 4-pane sash; the 3rd and 4th storeys have 4 and 3 pane sashes in paired openings. Nos 58, 62 & 66 have a front gable to each house, Nos 60 & 64 a gablet, all with stone kneelers, copings and finials. The rear is in late Georgian style with recessed sashes of 12, 9 and 6 panes. The brick ridge chimneys have shaped stone caps. INTERIORS: the undercrofts have brick barrel vaults, those to Nos 58 & 64 being cut away at the front. Nos 58 & 66 have newel stairs in a Jacobean manner; No.66 has 6-panel doors. The upper storeys of Nos 60-64 were not inspected. Included for the survival of undercrofts.
