The entry for the following building:- TL 9273-9373 BARDWELL THE GREEN
(west side) 5/16 Croft House - II
shall be amended to read: TL 9273-9373 BARDWELL THE GREEN
(west side)
5/16 Croft House - 14.12.83 II* House. C15. Timber framed, with timbers exposed along front; close studding
with tension braces to upper storey, considerable later studding to ground
storey. Rendered on sides and rear. Thatched, half-hipped roof. 3-cell form
with former open hall. Internal chimney stack with 2 attached shafts set
diagonally. Various casement windows of C19 and C20. 2 original windows to
upper floor, one to extreme left with diamond mullions in situ, and other
secondary window openings, some blocked. Doorway to right, in position of
cross-entry; C18 6-panel door with 2 glazed upper panels, C20 open porch,
gabled and thatched. Original arched doorway at rear with C20 door.
Interior: Some good exposed studding with evidence for various diamond-
mullioned windows. Fine hall open truss: massive braces to tie beam forming
4-centred arch, plank spandrels, octagonal crown-post with moulded base and
cap and 4-way bracing at the head. All roof timbers in hall are heavily
sooted. Intact lower end wall of hall with pair of hollow-chamfered 4-
centre arched service doorways. 2-bay parlour: knee-braced bridging beam
(one brace renewed), heavy plain joists. 7 joists in the centre of the room
are trimmed just short of the gable end, with no original framing
underneath; this seems to be original work but its purpose is unclear.
Parlour chamber open truss altered: tie beam replaced by cruck-like timbers
supporting a new tie-beam at a higher level; this now carries the shortened
octagonal crown-post, which retains its moulded cap and 4-way bracing
Remainder of roof intact. Part of earlier thatch base coat (fleeking)
visible. Late C16 inserted floor in hall: heavy cross-beams with nicked
stepped stop-chamfers, chamfered joists with bar stops. Studded screen
against cross-passage is C16 or C17. Stack inserted in upper bay of hall:
large open fireplace in hall with original lintel, late C17 cupboard to one
side. Parlour fireplace rebuilt mid C20. Against the stack is a C17 newel
stair with carved finial to newel post. ---------------------------------------- TL 9273-9373 BARDWELL THE GREEN (West Side)
5/16 Croft House
- - II
House. C16. 2 storeys: 6 bays. Timber-framed, with timbers exposed along
front, rendered on sides and rear. Thatched, half-hipped roof. Internal
chimney-stack with 2 attached square shafts, set diagonally. Early C19 3-light
casement windows to ground storey, 2-light to upper storey. Various blocked
windows in upper storey: 3 original, 2 with mullions in situ, and 2 secondary
openings, cut through frame. 6-panel door at extreme north end, with C20 open
porch, gabled and thatched. The framing is puzzling: tension bracing to upper
storey, and considerable replacement of studding to ground storey. The northern
half has evidence of an inserted main beam, and may well have a medieval core.
Several bays are very short, with intermediate main posts, running the whole
height of the frame, between them.
