Wooden Railing in front of Bold Arms
Hotel) GV II Hotel, now public house. Probably C18; enlarged and altered.
White painted render, slate roofs on 4 levels. Irregular
linear plan formed by double-depth main range with additions
to both ends and rear.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys to different heights plus small
single-storey extension to right, a 4-window main range with
set-back 3-window wing to left and set-back 2- plus 2-window
wing to right.
The main range, with plinth and moulded gutter cornice, has
doorways at the left end and between the third and fourth
windows, both with fluted wooden pilasters and flat canopies
suspended on metal ties. Large canted bay window to the right
of each, with 6/6 sashes, 2 6/6 sashes to the ground floor
between, and four 6/6 sashes above, with moulded architraves.
The left wing, which is longer and lower, has 2 French windows
and a tripartite window at ground floor, 3 widely spaced 3/6
sashes above.
The right-hand wing has a doorway protected by a Regency-style
latticed metal porch with swept roof, a tripartite sashed
window to the right, 2 3/6 sashes above, and a moulded gutter
cornice. Further right is a single-storey extension with 2
tripartite windows.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached to the front wall, enclosing
each of the canted bay windows, are simple wooden railings for
tethering horses (probably restored).
Forms group with stable and coach-house range to rear (qv),
and with Nos 68 & 70 (qv), 72-86 (qv), and 88-92 (qv)
opposite.
