Royal Hotel) II Hotel, 1853-4 by Thomas Withnell; enlarged 1865; and
subsequently integrated with a pair of large houses to the
left (formerly the Clifton Hotel). Stucco, with slate roofs.
STYLE: mixed styles, the original portion with a Jacobean
accent, its extension in French Renaissance style, and the
portion to the left eclectic.
PLAN: 3 substantial blocks, that at the right-hand
(south-west) end being the original hotel and that in the
centre the 1865 extension to it.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with cellars and attics; 5:6:5 bays. The
right-hand portion is almost symmetrical, the outer bays
breaking forwards slightly, with quoins and shaped gables.
2-storey canted bay windows throughout, with cornices to both
levels and the lower dentilled, and parapets, the outer bays
with pilasters and consoled fronts imitating balustrades. 1/1
sashes to ground and first floors, 2/2 to second floor; small
round-headed window in each gable.
Square tower behind ridge, with banded corner pilasters,
round-headed window and pyramidal roof with finial. Large late
C20 octagonal conservatory added to south-west corner.
The centre portion is symmetrical except for a linking sixth
bay, has a semicircular turret in the centre with a conical
roof, and outer bays which break forwards slightly and have
2-storey bay windows with curved corners and projected
second-floor windows with arched gables, and pavilion roofs.
Sill bands to all floors, bracketed eaves; tall square-headed
1/1 sashes at ground floor; tall round-headed 1/1 sashes at
first floor in groups of 3, 2, 5, 2, 3 and 2 with linked
2-centred hoodmoulds; segmental-headed 1/1 sashes at second
floor except the outer bays which have 2-centred arches
containing paired round-headed sashes.
Large glazed gabled canopy to entrance in sixth bay. The
portion to the left, symmetrical except for porch in fourth
bay, has 2-storey bay windows to the centre and outer bays
(the latter canted), all with bracketed cornices; bracketed
frieze.
Shaped gables to the centre and outer bays and
segmental-headed dormers between them; and a mansard roof.
All windows are 1/1 sashes: square-headed at ground floor,
segmental-headed at first and second floors, round-headed in
attic.
INTERIOR: includes dining rooms and ballrooms. Principal rooms
with stained glass skylights. Listing NGR: SD3327917195
