Mews, now houses. 1824-1828. Cobbles, some painted, brick
dressings and stucco. Roof of slate, that to No.12 turnerised.
EXTERIOR/PLAN: known originally as Kemp Town Mews, this is the
southern half of 2 parallel ranges of buildings; the northern
half, Nos 1-7, and 1-3 Rock Grove (qv) is also listed. At the
east and west end gate piers in stucco, ball finials to those
at the east end. Although the arrangement of each unit follows
no type, the whole is unified by scale, 2 storeys, and
repetition of similar elements and materials. The following
description, therefore, will detail individual elevations
rather than define a common type.
Nos 8-11 has not been as extensively restored as the rest or,
indeed, as the range to the north. These are now used largely
for storage.
No.8 has a 4-window range; flat-arched entrance in
second-window range, with flat-arched window to either side;
stable door now garage to right party wall; first-floor
windows are camber arched except for small bathroom window
which is flat arched.
No.9 is vacant, the ground floor taken up with garages and
storage spaces, all later additions; 3-window range, all
windows camber arched.
No.10 has a 5-window range; segmental-arched entrance with
overlight; to left a segmental-arched window, and to the right
2 more, now blocked; garages with concrete lintels on brick
jambs take up the whole ground floor, all date to C20.
No.11 has a 3-window range; flat-arched entrance with a garage
to either side; in first-window range above a segmental-arched
window next to a blocked loading bay door.
No.12 has a 3-window range; flat-arched entrance with
overlight, to either side of which is a tripartite window set
under a segmental arch, the whole of late C20 date;
camber-arched windows to second- and third-window range;
garage to right party wall.
No.13A has a 2-window range; flat-arched entrance with
flat-arched window to either side; camber-arched windows to
first floor. No.13B has a 3-window range; flat-arched entrance
with a flat-arched window to either side; camber-arched
windows to first floor; top sash of first-floor window in
centre range has 10 pane sash of original design. No.13C has
entrance to former 2 and a 2-window range; camber-arched
windows to first floor. Nos 13A, 13B and 13C have a continuous
broad storey band in stucco, and a brick band to the first
floor. These units are also slightly taller than the rest.
No.14 has a 2-window range; flat-arched entrance;
segmental-arched windows to first floor, that to the left
having 3/3 sashes of original design and that to the right
having a frame which reaches down into the ground floor and
must formerly have been a loading bay; broad stucco storey
band.
No.15 has a 2-window range, all openings segmental arched and
all sashes of original 3/3 design; return of brick with stucco
facing.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
