Birkrigg and attached barn to east
II
Farmhouse with attached barn. Probably later C17, enlarged and
altered; barn probably earlier C18.
HOUSE: coursed white-washed rubble with quoins, stone slate
roof. Single-depth plan on east-west axis, facing away from
road, formerly 2 units but extended to 3 by incorporation of a
small former outbuilding which links it to the barn. Two
storeys (probably raised from one storey), 2+1 windows. The
2-window portion has a stone slate drip-course over the ground
floor starting approx. 1 metre from the left corner and
extending to the junction with the former outbuilding to the
right; a square-headed doorway in the centre (now enclosed by
a light C20 glazed conservatory), and two rectangular 2-light
casement windows on each floor, all with small-paned glazing.
(A former 1-light fire-window to the right at ground floor,
blocked and concealed externally, was formerly visible
internally.) The 1-window portion to the right, originally
single storey, has a stone slate course at the former eaves
level, a window and doorway at ground floor and another window
above and between these (both windows with glazing like the
other windows). Gable chimney to left, ridge chimney at
junction. Rear: marked difference in the masonry between
random rubble at ground floor and watershot coursed rubble
above; one narrow window at ground floor, a small
single-storey gabled wing to right of this, with a doorway in
the side; 2 unequal square windows at 1st floor; stone slate
course over ground floor of 3rd unit, and a small square
window above this.
INTERIOR: housepart in 2nd bay has 2 chamfered lateral beams,
that to the right with bearers of a former smokehood, exposed
joists with scored decoration; large C18 rectangular stone
fireplace with moulded cornice; inserted partition to make
passage at lower end. Dog-legged oak staircase in rear corner,
and an under-stairs cupboard which has a batten and board door
with a silver keyhole surround. Batten-and-board door at 1st
floor with stepped boards and strap hinges. Wall thickness at
1st floor half that at ground floor.
The BARN, of mixed random rubble with large quoins and stone
slate roof, 6 bays plus a 1-bay addition, has a
segmental-headed wagon doorway in the centre, with rubble
voussoirs, a doorway and a loading doorway to the 1st bay, a
window and a doorway to the 6th bay; the addition at the
right-hand end has a doorway offset right, and steps up the
gable wall to a loft doorway. INTERIOR: 5 original collar
trusses.
