Foleijohn Park) II Large country house in parkland with lake. Late C18, alterd
and extended C19, altered mid C20.
MATERIALS: painted render, part slate hipped roof, part flat
roof.
PLAN: irregular plan with service wing on south-west.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, with string at first floor level, heavy
cornice with egg-and-dart enrichment and blocking course.
Several chimneys with corniced heads and tall Doulton pots.
Sash windows with glazing bars, moulded architraves and
bracketed sills, some windows have moulded cornices and
pediments.
Entrance front, south-west, symmetrical. Centre section of
5-bays, prostyle Ionic porch enclosed C20 with glazed double
door under round arch. Projecting wings form courtyard open on
south-west, wing on left with splayed end, wing on right with
flat end. Both wings have 4 windows to courtyard.
INTERIOR: entrance hall with Ionic columns supporting
dentilled entablature. Moulded skirting and dado rail. Moulded
dentilled ceiling cornice, enriched with egg-and-dart
ornament. Dog-leg staircase with barley sugar balusters and
moulded handrail. First 10 treads of staircase have been
altered to form curved approach to straight flight above.
Panelled doorcase at each end of hall with moulded, eared
architrave, frieze and pediment, all enriched with foliated,
egg-and-dart, and bead and reel ornament. Marble chimneypiece
with cast iron grate, engaged colonettes with entablature,
egg-and-dart ornament and centre panel in plain frieze carved
with Greek male head. Dining room: moulded skirting and dado
rail, ceiling cornice similar to hall. Marble chimneypiece
with cast iron grate, foliated console brackets, rose corner
blocks and frieze, moulded mantelpiece.
Sitting room similar but with grey and white mottled
chimneypiece and hearth, with cast iron grate.
Study and dining room similar with wooden chimneypiece, eared
surrounds with black marble inset. A plaque in the hall states
that "During the German occupation of Norway HM King Haakow
VII resided in this house. March 1942-June 1945".
