War memorial. Erected 1921.

MATERIALS: Built of Cotswold stone.

PLAN: It has a square plan and is surrounded by iron railings.

DESCRIPTION: The memorial consists of a simple Celtic style wheel-head cross and a tall, tapering shaft set upon a square plinth. It stands on a base of three steps. The south (front) face of the plinth carries the inscription: 'TO THE GLORY OF / GOD / AND TO THE MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF BILSEY / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / SERVING THE KING / IN THE YEARS OF OUR LORD / 1914-18'. 'I saw...the souls of / them that were slain / for the word of GOD / ....and white robes were / given unto every one of / them, Rev VI. 9.11'. The west and east sides of the plinth are inscribed with the names of the men who lost lives; the north face carries the inscription: 'AND ALSO A THANK TO ALMIGHTY GOD FOR THE RETURN HOME OF THEIR 90 COMRADES'. 'YEA THE LORD HATH DONE GREAT THINGS FOR US ALREADY: WHEREOF WE REJOICE, PS CXXXVI'. The roll of honour naming the men who died during the Second World War is inscribed on the four sides of the upper step of the base; the front (south) face also carries the dates: '1939 / 1945'.

HISTORY: The great age of memorial building was in the aftermath of the First World War, and the Bisley memorial was dedicated on 3 April 1921.

REASON FOR DESIGNATION: The war memorial in Bisley is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Historic Interest: It is a modest but eloquent witness to the impact of tragic world events on this community. Honouring the war dead of the parish, the memorial has strong historic and cultural significance
Architectural Value: It has group value with several listed buildings in the immediate vicinity
