GV II

House, now flats. From 1808 with C20 alterations. By John Pinch. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, and rear, brick party wall to right, double pile parapeted roof, covering not visible behind parapet to front, Welsh slate to rear, coped gable wall and two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots to right. Staircase to rear. EXTERIOR: Four storeys, basement and sub-basement, three-window range. First floor has three nine/nine-sashes in plain reveals with wrought iron balconettes (cf. Nos 19-23 Park Street qv), to centre with surround with reeded pilaster strips, carved console brackets, frieze with carved swag decoration and moulded cornice, second floor has three six/six-sashes, to centre with horns, in plain reveals, third floor has two four/four-sashes in plain reveals, similar blind window to centre. Ground floor has to right two six/six-sashes in recessed plain reveals with stone sills with recessed panels below, to left six-panel door with reeded and raised and fielded panels in reeded surround with side lights and decorative fanlight (cf. Cavendish Place, qv) in recessed round headed plain reveal, one step to pennant paved crossover with cast iron footscraper. Basement has two six/six-sashes in plain reveals with stone sills. V-jointed rustication to ground floor forming voussoirs with keystone over ground floor openings, frieze and moulded band course forming sill band to first floor windows, sill band to second floor windows, frieze and modillion cornice over second floor, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Wrought iron lampholder over front door, C19 square section pipe attached to offset right angle. Rear elevation retains early glazing bar sashes, full height bow to left has wrought iron balcony to first floor, band over ground floor, sill band to second floor, frieze and moulded cornice over second floor, small single storey extension to ground floor. INTERIOR: Has cantilevered stone staircase with moulded soffit, stick balusters, mahogany grip handrail, stone floor with slate dots to hall, early glazed screen with C20 reproduction overlight to entrance hall, simple decoration to arch between entrance and staircase halls, six-panel doors with bead applied to panels off hall, ground floor rear room with bow end has reeded marble fireplace with roundel corners removed here from ground floor front room c1989, acanthus leaf cornice, ceiling rose copied from first floor rear, ground floor front subdivided. First floor rear room, similar to ground floor rear, has attached wrought iron railings and gate with shaped heads on painted bases. HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; upper part of Park Street commenced to design of John Palmer and continued but not completed to design of John Pinch after 1808; street formerly terminated by All Saints Chapel at top and intended to be continued in a NW direction as Regent Place.
