12/06/50 GV II House, now flats. c1786 with C19 and C20 alterations. Attributed to John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to rear. Double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh Slate to front and rear very large slates to rear, with coped party wall with two ashlar stacks to right. Staircase to front.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three window front. First floor has three six/nine sashes, to centre and right with horns, in splayed reveals with stone sills, to centre and right with wrought iron balconettes; second floor has three six/six sashes, to centre and right with horns, in plain reveals; ground floor has two six/six horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills to right, to left six panel door with beaded, fielded and glazed panels with cast iron ring knocker in beaded reveal with zinc porch with panelled sides and curved brackets supporting ogee hood with pierced cresting above and below frieze with applied rosette ornament, probably cast lead; two steps to crossover with concrete paving. Basement has two six/six horned sashes in plain reveals with continuous stone sill; crossover partly infilled beneath in ashlar, C20 timber area steps. Double dormer with plate glass horned sashes. Weathered sill band to second floor; lintel, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation has simple wrought iron balconettes to first floor and second floor, glazing bar sashes, plate glass sashes to double and single dormer, lead hopperhead at eaves.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached wrought iron railings and gate with urn heads and urn finials to left, centre and right on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Developed in conjunction with Portland Place (qv) by John Hensley; Nos 12-15 Burlington Street, Nos 1-4 Portland Place and Nos 17-20 Portland Place on leasehold land demised to John Hensley 30 March 1782 for three lives by legatees of Morford's Estate and let out on building leases 25 March, 24 June and 31 October 1785; East side of Burlington Street and Portland Place on freehold land belonging to Hensley conveyed to Hensley and William Phillips by Duperee family 1 and 2 January 1772 and then by lease and release 23 and 24 June 1783 from Hensley, Phillips and their trustee to Daniel Tanner as trustee for Hensley alone.
