Summary
First World War memorial, 1922 by Emley & Sons of Newcastle upon Tyne with Second World War additions.
Reasons for Designation
Seaton Burn war memorial is designated at Grade II, for the following principal reasons:
* Historic Interest: it is a poignant reminder of the impact of tragic world events upon an individual community and, thus, has strong cultural and historical significance within both a local and national context;
* Design interest: it is a well executed war memorial by Emley & Sons of Newcastle upon Tyne, composed of good materials with a strong design in the form of a mausoleum.
History
This war memorial was erected by public subscription at a cost of £980 on a site donated by Seaton Burn Coal Company. It was made by Emley & Sons of Newcastle upon Tyne, stonemasons who were also responsible for two monuments in Sunderland (Grade II listed) and for the design of the reredos and font in the Church of St George, Newcastle (Grade I listed) The war memorial was unveiled on 8th July 1922 by R. S. Barrett, agent to Seaton Burn Coal Company, and was dedicated by the Rev. J.H. Mawson. The iron railings surrounding the memorial were refurbished in 2012 by local volunteers.
Details
MATERIALS: red and grey granite
PLAN: the memorial in the form of a mausoleum is set within a wrought iron enclosure, itself set within a roadside embayment formed by a stone wall with pillars at intervals. A three-stepped square base and castellated plinth supports a tall square pedestal with short curvilinear clasping buttresses and engaged columns at the corners; the latter rise above the entablature as decorative finials. The top of the pedestal is surmounted by a domed column bearing a stone Celtic cross. Pink granite panels on the front sides of the column bear the 72 names of the Fallen of both World Wars. Lettering is incised and gilded using sans serif capitols throughout. The inscription on the front face reads:
In memory of the men / of Seaton Burn / and District / who fell / in the Great War / 1914-18 /
Also / 1939-1945
