History
In 1919, having received £50 back from a £120 contribution made to a Red Cross Hospital during the First World War, the neighbouring parishes of Welsh Newton and Llanrothal debated how they would use the funds to create a memorial to the men of the parishes who had lost their lives in the conflict. It was resolved that the two villages would share a memorial, and the first proposal was for a parish room as a memorial. In the event, however, a memorial cross was raised, sited at the roadside in Welsh Newton, on land given by Mr T Jones of Newton Farm. The war memorial, which was made by Arthur Hall, sculptor and monumental mason of Monmouth from local Buckholt stone, was unveiled in a ceremony on 12 November 1920. The names of those who died in the Second World War were added to the memorial after the end of the conflict.
