Reasons for Designation
Fakenham War Memorial, which is situated in the Market Place, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: an elegant and carefully detailed design;
* Setting: raised high on steps and plinth, the war memorial occupies a prominent position in the Market Place;
* Group value: several listed buildings stand around the Market Place and The Square where the war memorial stands.
History
Costing some £600, the war memorial was unveiled and dedicated on 2 August 1921. The architect was H H Palmer, a Norfolk architect who also designed the Holt War Memorial (Grade II) and it was made by local masons, E Rush and F Harrison. In 2013, five further names from later conflicts were added.
Details
The war memorial stands on the edge of the Market Place, in the pedestrianised Square. It comprises a stone cross on a tapering shaft, standing on an octagonal plinth. The plinth is raised on a four-stepped octagonal base. The memorial is surrounded by ornate railings. The inscriptions for both the First and Second World War are inscribed on the sides of the plinth and the steps, along with the names of the men who died. The inscriptions read:
IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918 (96 NAMES)
IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ WHO FELL/ IN THE WAR/ 1939 – 1945 (24 NAMES)
Five additional names are inscribed, two from the Second World War, two from the Korean War and one from Iraq (1954).
