Summary
A war memorial, designer unknown, constructed circa 1921.
Reasons for Designation
The war memorial cross at the Church of St Mary in Bitton is listed at Grade II, for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20.
* Group value: with the church of St Mary (Grade I), several tombs (listed Grade II), and a number of surrounding listed buildings which provide its setting.
History
The war memorial was erected after about 1921, in a prominent location, in the churchyard of the parish church of St Mary. The memorial was set up to honour the Fallen of the First World War; after the Second World War it was altered to include the men of the parish who had lost their lives in that conflict.
