Summary
First World War Memorial, erected around 1920, with a Second World War addition.
Reasons for Designation
Wramplingham War Memorial, erected around 1920, and dedicated to the fallen of the First and Second World Wars, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons: Historic interest: * as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20. Architectural interest: * as an accomplished and well-realised war memorial which takes the form of a simple Latin cross.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead: therefore the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss. One such memorial was raised at Wramplingham in Norfolk as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the seven men of the parish who lost their lives in the conflict. No records of the unveiling of the memorial have been found, though it is presumed to have been erected around 1920, as most memorials were. Following the Second World War the name of a single parishioner who died during that conflict was added to the memorial.
