Architectural interest:
* as an accomplished and well-realised war memorial which takes the form of a simple Latin cross;
* it was designed by William Douglas Caröe, one of the leading Arts and Crafts Gothic church architects.
Group value:
* with the Church of St Mary (listed Grade I).
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of war memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead: therefore the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
One such memorial was raised at Henstead with Hulver Street in Suffolk as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the 11 local men who died during the conflict. It was designed by William Douglas Caröe FSA (1857-1938) and built by Messrs Clary and Wright. The memorial was unveiled on 29 February 1920 by the Reverend TE Cattell.
Following the Second World War the names of three parishioners who died in that conflict were added to the memorial.
