Summary
A pillar fountain thought to date to the late-C19.
Reasons for Designation
The Pillar Fountain to the front of 3 Hints Cottage is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Architectural Interest:
* For the aesthetic quality, including the lion's head, characteristic of the pillar fountains made by Glenfield and Kennedy of Kilmarnock;
* As an example of the innovative anti-freezing and self-closing design patented by Kennedy.
Historic Interest:
* It is a good example of a type of public utility that was once a common feature of towns and villages and is now becoming increasingly rare;
* As evidence of the growing awareness of the importance of public health and the need for clean drinking water during the C19.
History
The installation of drinking fountains began in earnest in the C19, as the use of town and village pumps was discontinued after the discovery that cholera was a water-borne disease. The move was also supported by the Temperance Movement as it considered water to be a morally preferable form of refreshment. Drinking fountains came in many forms; some were freestanding, and some were attached or built into walls.
This water fountain was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock. The firm was founded by Thomas Kennedy, who moved to Kilmarnock in 1824. He, along with John Cameron, patented a design for a device for measuring water consumption, and in 1863 formed the Kennedy Patent Water Meter Co. Glenfield Co Ltd. was later also founded by Kennedy and specialised in the supply of castings and foundry work. The companies were later merged to form Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock in 1899.
The designs of their public water fountains often featured a distinctive lion's head. The design was advertised as Kennedy’s patent, self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain. As the fountain is embellished with the name for Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd., it is likely that this fountain was installed around the beginning of the C20.
