Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon
We have received an application from a member of the public to list the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon. We are giving the listing application careful consideration and aim to make a recommendation to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as soon as possible.
The Oasis Leisure Centre, designed by Peter Sargent of Gillinson, Barnett and Partners in 1974, opened on 1 January 1976. It included a diving pool and leisure pool with wave machine under its distinctive, Perspex-glazed aluminium dome, with a separate building housing facilities for indoor pursuits including bowls, squash, and shooting, and a large, multi-purpose sports hall. The two buildings were joined by an entrance range with a large concourse, changing rooms, a restaurant and other leisure facilities.
We understand that there is considerable local concern for the future of the building and its facilities, and strong support for the continued operation of the pool. We have received assurances from the owner and leaseholder that no works will take place nor decisions taken about the future of the Oasis Centre until our listing assessment is concluded.
Our focus now is on completing our assessment. We will update this page when DCMS’s decision on the application is published.
