The West Sussex Historic Environment Record is a definitive source of information for the historic environment within the county of West Sussex. This resource, which is fully accessible to the public through West Sussex County Council, contains over 18,000 records on archaeological sites and findspots, together with buildings and landscapes of historic significance. West Sussex is made up of a variety of landscape characters including high and low weald, the South Downs and the coastal plain, and its historic environment includes many important examples of past human activity in the landscape dating to all periods from the Palaeolithic to the present day. It also holds information for the Sussex Historic Landscape Characterisation and the Historic Town Character Assessments (Sussex Extensive Urban Survey), details of which are available on the West Sussex County Council website. Although the HER holds information for Chichester District, the data is not included on Heritage Gateway for West Sussex as the District maintain and enhance their own HER. It is therefore advised that any requests for information should be directed to the Chichester District HER. Detailed commercial and research enquiries should be directed to the HER Officer, Environment and Heritage Team, First Floor Northleigh, Tower Street, Chichester, West Sussex PO19 1RH or alternatively fill out the online form
