South Yorkshire HER

Description

The South Yorkshire Sites and Monuments Record contains approximately 5000 entries on the archaeology of South Yorkshire, covering standing remains, buried features, stray finds and buildings of archaeological interest. As such, it is the first port of call for anyone researching the historic environment of South Yorkshire. The Record holds information on all the known archaeological sites in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield, including such notable sites as medieval Monk Bretton Priory, Barnsley; the Iron Age fort at Sutton Common, Doncaster; Templeborough's Roman Fort, Rotherham; and the cementation steel furnace at Doncaster Street, Sheffield. The Record database also includes the results of our recently completed Historic Environment Characterisation study. However, much other information is still held on paper, so a visit to our search room can be very useful. For example, the record holds copies of reports on archaeological excavation and building recording work carried out since about 1990 (after the implementation of Planning Policy Guidance Note 16). These can be consulted in person, by prior appointment, at our offices in Howden House, Sheffield.
