The Oxfordshire Historic Environment Record is the definitive source of information on the historic environment in four of the five districts within the modern county of Oxfordshire. A county of many market towns, large country estates, military bases and extensive rural landscapes, Oxfordshire's historic environment is diverse. Notable are the Lower Palaeolithic production sites, the Neolithic and Bronze Age funerary landscapes, nationally important and abundant Iron Age to Roman settlements, forts and villas, Anglo Saxon to Medieval minsters, churches and religious houses, the Post Medieval country estates landscaped by Capability Brown and others, and the World War II military bases and surviving monuments. Data held by the Oxfordshire Historic Environment Record includes both paper and digital copies of more than 65,000 monument/building/findspot records, events or archaeological activity records, finds records, and sources. It also contains information on nationally important designated sites (Scheduled Monuments, Listed Buildings, Registered Parks and Gardens, and Registered Battlefields). This publicly available digital resource on the Heritage Gateway contains more than 23,000 records on archaeological sites, buildings, and find spots of archaeological or historic significance and is suitable for most general research. Please note that while every reasonable effort is made to verify information held within the HER, the HER is compiled from a variety of sources, some of which are unchecked. The Oxfordshire HER is enhanced and corrected as new information becomes available but cannot be accountable for the accuracy of all information contained within it. Users who identify inaccuracies or omissions in the Oxfordshire data are requested to notify the HER Officer, using the hyperlink on Heritage Gateway records. The sites included on the Oxfordshire HER and Heritage Gateway are part of a public record, but this does not imply public access, as many of the sites are on private land. Because not all HER data is included, the data derived from Heritage Gateway is incomplete for the purposes of desk-based assessments or studies associated with development, planning or land use changes. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, or for more detailed public, community or academic research please see our website and consult the HER Officer directly via the links provided.
