The Northumberland Historic Environment Record (HER) is maintained by Northumberland County Council and includes the Northumberland National Park. It comprises a series of databases and GIS data which contain summary information gathered from a variety of sources and acts as a signpost to more detailed records held in other collections. The HER contains over 34,000 records and collects information about archaeological and historic sites and landscapes as diverse as prehistoric settlements and Hadrian’s Wall to historic gardens and the defences of World War II. It has been developed in order to provide as much up-to-date information as possible in relation to the archaeology of the County. The HER is primarily used as a tool for development management (planning) purposes but it is equally useful for research purposes. New information is constantly being added to the HER and feedback from users, as well as news of new discoveries and updates to our records is encouraged.
