Leicestershire and Rutland HER

Description

The Leicestershire & Rutland Historic Environment Record (HER) contains over 15,000 records (historic buildings, archaeological finds and features) across the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland. It does not include sites within Leicester City, which has its own HER. These records range in date from the Palaeolithic (about 500,000 years ago) to the present day, including recent sites such as Cold War monitoring posts. At present not all of our records are published on the Heritage Gateway. We are making further data available on a regular basis. For more information on this process, and to find out where the gaps in the published data are, please visit our Heritage Gateway information page. The HER is situated at County Hall in Glenfield, on the outskirts of Leicester. As well as the digital data we hold various paper and digital sources including fieldwork reports, plans and photographs. If you would like to find out more about the HER, including contact information, please visit our HER information page. Please be aware that information on the Heritage Gateway should not be used for commercial purposes. If you wish to obtain data for commercial purposes please contact the HER directly.

Information available

All paper files are now stored off-site so need to be requested back to county hall prior to any visit. Some files have been digitised - if so they are available via computers in the office. Files include fieldwork reports, aerial photographs, historic building photographs, RF Hartley's ridge and furrow maps and paper copies of research relating to various sites. We do not hold historic maps (i.e. tithe maps); these are held at the Record Office in Wigston, south of Leicester. We prefer to answer requests via e-mail. This service is open to members of the public and archaeological contractors, though there is a charge for commercial consultations. Appointments can be made to visit the HER though the files required must be ordered in advance of any visit.
