Former Atomic Bomb Store, Barnham
Former Atomic Bomb Store, Barnham, Suffolk IP24 2PH
‘The Special Storage Unit’ was built in two phases between 1953 and 1959 for the deep maintenance of the ‘Blue Danube’ atomic bomb. Strategic defence operations required utmost secrecy, and the remote MOD site, to the southwest of RAF Barnham, was well suited for this purpose. From here the missiles were transported in escorted convoys to the RAF sites of Bomber Command.
