Church of St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey Street, Bermondsey SE1 - Southwark

The Church was rebuilt in the late C17 on the site of a former medieval church developed from the Chapel of the Convent of Bermondsey, first recorded in the late C13.The lower stages of the C15 tower are incorporated. There is a history of weak structure, not helped by remodelling in the 1830 and1880's. Stucco finished throughout on brick under roof or slates and copper gutters within parapets. The roofs have been heavily repaired and strapped historically but are still under stress. This may be related to falls of plaster from ceilings. The leakage through copper gutters is hard to trace.
