Church Of The Holy Family, Blackbird Leys - Oxford

Innovative church designed by Colin Shewring 1964-5, with a timber hyperbolic paraboloid roof designed by the engineer Hugh Tottenham. It comprises a spacious heart-shaped worship space with sacristy, small square campanile, narthex and toilets. Constructed with cavity walls faced with pale grey brick externally and rendered concrete block internally. Stained softwood doors and aluminium windows. The timber boarded roof was originally covered in aluminium sheet which was later replaced with a membrane: this now leaks leading to localised failure of the main roof structure.
