Description

Archive from the excavation of Cleeve Abbey by the Adkins' in 1988 in association with Somerset County Council and English Heritage. The work was carried out as part of a drainage scheme.

The archive consists of the original report, with covering letter, which contains printed plans, typewritten sheets, original manuscript plans and sections and reduced size photocopies of the larger plans and sections. All parts are on A4 sheets. The report was produced as a single complete piece of work and has been catalogued as such; with no division between the copied and original material.

The archive also contains two original sections and two plans. These show Trench C that was much larger than the other 2 trenches and thus the drawings would not fit into the A4 format of the report. Photocopies of these drawings are included in the main body of the report.

Finally there are pre-existing AMIE catalogue records of a set of photographs of the excavations. These are the slides catalogued in section 6 of the report. The AMIE records list them as Lost.

The main archive is deposited with the NMR and a copy is held by the County SMR. The finds have been deposited in the county museum.

A version of the main text and two of the figures from the report have been published (see bibliographic references) In the preliminary cataloguing of the archive mention was made to 15 Measured Drawings and 4 prints that are not with the rest of the archive in the storage location given. It is possible the Measure Drawings referred to the original plans and sections in the report, these have now been catalogued as part of the report. Neither the report nor accompanying letter makes mention of 4 photographic prints. They were possibly initially catalogued with this archive by mistake.

Archival History

Initially catalogued at collection level in Jul 2002 and recatalogued more extensively and to item level in Jul 2004.
