The collection contains a printed book entitled 'Some European Architectural Libraries' by Talbot Hamlin (Columbia University Press: New York, 1939), a printed article entitled ' Library Buildings' reprinted from 'The Years Work in Librarianship' (Volume 8, 1935) by E.J. Carter, and manuscript notes made from Hamlin's book.
Talbot Hamlin was librarian of the Avery Architectural Library at Columbia University and his book contains photos and plans of European architectural libraries including the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Courtauld Institute, Soane Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum. This copy was owned by Edward Carter and has a signed dedication by Hamlin to Carter on the rear endpaper.
Edward Julian Carter (1902-1982) was librarian of the RIBA and is in effect one of the founders of the National Buildings Record (NBR, later the National Monuments Record).
The handwritten notes on Hamlin's book are comprehensive and were made by an unidentified person, presumably a colleague of Carter. The book may have been a model for the arrangement of the NBR, which was based initially at the RIBA in 1941 and unlike most of the libraries described, begin to catalogue photographs (see pages 23 and 45).
The collection was acquired by the NMR in 2009.
