Estate sales particulars are brochures relating to the sales of land and property, usually by auction. The collection consists of 1423 estate sales particulars, referencing around 28,000 named buildings or sites. The majority of the particulars are over A3 in size and usually contain site maps and descriptive text on each of the properties being sold. The are also photographs, sketches and very rarely plans of a selection of the houses, farms and villages under offer.
Coverage is national, though the majority of brochures relate to large rural estates. They not only include country houses, manor houses and major farms, but also lodges, tied farms and entire villages. Town estates and development land are also featured in some of the particulars. Most of the sales particulars are dated between the 1880s and 1930s.
The collection was acquired by the National Monuments Record in the early 1970s from the Estates Exchange. A basic card index was made available, but the collection was not catalogued in detail until 1996-1997.
