Description

A collection of 72 black and white photographic prints taken between 1949 and 1951 to publicise the South Bank Exhibition of the 1951 Festival of Britain.

The photographs show the site before and during construction, including progress shots and general views, and after it was opened to the public. Photographs show the interior and exteriors of the pavilions, exhibitions and artworks. There are several photographs of artists and sculptors at work in their studios, notably Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. The Festival architects, designers and officials are shown in posed portraits and group shots.

The original caption on the reverse of each photograph has been transcribed. The photographs are housed within the Red Box Collection.
