Description

21 digital copies of prints showing part of the east side of Hull Harbour, the west side of the harbour between South End and North Bridge, in 1864. The digital scans were created from 35mm slide copies of the original photographic prints, which were later lost. An incomplete panarama drawn from the original prints appears in the book 'Georgian Hull' by Ivan and Elisabeth Hall (1978/79). One photograph is missing from the original set of prints (the rear of 1-5 High Street), and a second photograph is missing from the copied set (rear of 11-17 High Street).

Archival History

1864 prints of the Old Harbour, Hull, were found in the 1970s by the late Ian Ashley Cooper, a chartered surveyor, in the attic of the Royal Insurance building (just prior to its demolition) in Lowgate, Hull. Mr Cooper loaned the prints to an unknown person, but they were never returned. Prior to the loan, the prints were copied onto 35mm slides by Christopher Ketchell at Hull College Local History Unit, although Hull History Centre are now unable to locate these.
