The collection is comprised of sales particulars mainly relating to properties dealt with by Jackson Stops and Staff and associates, but particulars from other auctioneers and estate agencies are also represented.
They record sales of single properties, small estates and the outlying portions of larger estates. Residential buildings account for 53% of properties for sale, farms and farmhouses comprise a further 25% and the remaining 22% includes a wide range of buildings such as hotels, watermills, shops, restaurants etc. In total over 14,000 named monuments have been catalogued.
There are sales particulars for most English counties, the largest number being for Sussex with 11%, the lowest represented by eight counties each of which comprises less than 1%. There are also a number of sales particulars for Scotland, Ireland and Wales, comprising 11% of the collection.
The date range is wide, with sales particulars from 1909 to 1979, but the majority date from between 1935 and 1965.
This collection complements the Estate Sales Particulars collection of 1421 sales particulars which date from the 1870s to the 1930s, and a further collection of modern sales particulars held on open access at the National Monuments Record Centre.
The collection was donated to the National Monuments Record on 29th January 1996, having been held on behalf of Jackson Stops by The Royal United Kingdom Beneficent Association (RUKBA).
It has been divided into three archive types, SA, SB and SC, relating to the physical dimensions of the sales particular. There is also a separate group of foreign sales particulars relating to sites in Scotland, Wales and Ireland, and two negatives and file prints.
The collection was catalogued in detail between May and October 1999.
