The collection comprises twenty photographic prints taken by John Henry Ball, a professional photographer and postcard producer from Seaford in East Sussex. The prints predominantly show coastal scenes including several showing boats and ships in harbour. Alongside these are images of churches and unidentified village houses. The photographs were taken between 1933 and 1940.
The collection also contains postcards and photocards by a variety of different photographers, which were collected by Ball. There are several photocard sets, including: twelve photocards showing views of the Lake District around Keswick; twelve photocards showing views of Battle Abbey; twelve photocards showing various buildings in Canterbury; six photocards showing buildings in Stratford upon Avon; twelve photographic postcards showing iconic London buildings and monuments; and five photographic postcards showing parks and gardens in Scarborough.
In addition there are 122 loose postcards, including some colour ones, showing scenes from around the country, many of them tourist and holiday destinations. These include seaside scenes, landscapes, churches and abbeys. Several of the postcards show sites in Scotland and Wales.
The postcards date from the early 20th century to the 1960s. Many were written to members of the Ball family at their home in Moseley, Birmingham.
Donated by Ball's daughter in law, Barbara Ball, 2005.
