The collection comprises ninety-one black and white negatives and forty-three colour transparencies of medieval stained glass in England, taken by Alfred Lammer between 1955 and 1960. Lammer was a professional photographer, and many of these images were used to illustrate a book, 'English Stained Glass of the Medieval Period', by John Baker (published 1978). The images are consequently of high quality.
Alfred Ritter von Lammer (1909-2000) was an Austrian born photographer, who settled in prewar London, and flew for the RAF during the Second World War. After the war, he worked for the London firm of photographers Studio Briggs, before setting up as a freelance photographer. He also taught photography, first at the Guildford School of Art, and then the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, before returning to Guildford School of Art until his retirement in 1976. He then taught part time at the Royal College of Art, where he was made an honorary fellow.
