The collection contains photographs, negatives, guidebooks, manuscripts, notes, maps, cuttings, correspondence and other papers relating to secular and ecclesiastical buildings. The collection is national in scope but about half of the negatives cover South East London, particularly Blackheath, Charlton, Plumstead and Greenwich.
Alan R. Martin FSA (1901-1974) was a solicitor and a published local historian of the Greenwich and Blackheath area.
Alan Martin donated a large collection of photographs of the Blackheath area to the National Buildings Record in 1944. His collection of papers were acquired by the NMR in 1973. Papers relating to his 1929 Blackheath exhibition catalogue were found amongst NBR administration files in 2007.
