A collection of mounted original prints, as well as a small number of glass negatives and their associated file prints. The images show village scenes and gardens, taken around the turn of the last century. Coverage is concentrated on sites in the south, with limited coverage of certain midland counties. The north of England receives no coverage at all in this collection, but OP12435-36 show North Yorkshire. Although the collection contains many views of large or historic houses, smaller and far more humble dwellings also feature significantly, with a number of views depicting a deliberately romantic view of the rural lanes and buildings of the English countryside. Images of churches show them both within their village setting or views of architectural detail.
No information is available regarding original acquisition. The collection was catalogued in detail in August 2000. The identity of the photographer has not been absolutely established, but is likely to be either Farnham Maxwell-Lyte (1826 - 1906) or Sir Henry C Maxwell-Lyte (1848 - 1940), or a son/brother of one of them. Prints are all stamped on the reverse 'Maxwell-Lyte'.
