The collection comprises journals, books, photographs, negatives, tapes and slides, mostly relating to Hadrian’s Wall and the surrounding area, but also including other historic sites, travels and wider archaeology. They date from between 1962-2016 and were created by insurance executive Norman H. Brewster (1939- 2022).
There are eleven series: unpublished books and journals on Hadrian's wall, Northumbria, Corbridge, the Ermine Street Guard, archeology and travel records (NHB01/1), photograph albums (NHB01/02), negatives (NHB01/03), negative indexes (NHB01/04), oversized prints (NHB01/05), packets of photographic prints and negatives (NHB01/06), boxed prints (NHB01/07), audio and video tapes (NHB01/08), slides (NHB01/09), documents and notes (NHB01/10) and a series of small prints originally in flip albums (NHB01/11)
Norman Brewster had a lifelong enthusiasm for Hadrian's Wall and Northumberland following his first visit there in 1962. As well as the archaeology of the wall and the forts along it, he was interested in the people who visited it as a monument in the present and the past. His journals provide a very personal account of his regular visits to excavate and walk.
A handlist is available.
The collection was acquired by the Historic England Archive in 2023.
