Therefore coverage in the collection is primarily of sites in Greater London (78%), but there is also coverage of Avon, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, East Sussex and the Isle of Wight, plus 3% other counties. Monument types photographed by Barkshire include houses, public and commercial buildings and structures, including contemporary buildings, plus public monuments and sculptures.
The date range of the collection is from 1978 to 1993.
The Barkshire collection provides a key context for any visual understanding of late Twentieth Century London.
A London-based professional freelance photographer and author of a number of published monographs illustrative of his photographic output, including Paul Barkshire's Unexplored London, 1987, and London Villages, 1992. The NMR first purchased prints in 1982. Later sets of both prints and negatives were also purchased, the total acquisition being 5104 negatives, and in 1994 the copyright for all the negatives was also acquired outright. The NMR holds the majority of his negatives and the rights to them, but Paul Barkshire himself retained several hundred negatives.
