Description

The collection comprises a leather-bound album containing 39 black and white photographs of Smarden, Kent, taken between about 1865 and 1875. The photographer of these images is unknown with the exception of one image which has been attributed to George Boyer Jones.

The images include views of Smarden Rectory, Smarden church prior to restoration and including interiors, and demolished or altered buildings in the village. There are also photographs of archaeological finds and a few groups of people. Very few of the images are annotated. There is a Francis Haslewood publication on Smarden 1866 which uses at least one lithograph deriving from this album.

Archival History

The album was acquired by the NMR in 2009.
