This is possibly the first systematic photographic survey ever made of a single town in Britain with over 250 annotated & numbered copies of prints including those used in the publication 'Victorian Townscape: The Work of Samuel Smith' by Michael Millward & Brian Coe [1974]. Though mainly depicting the port of Wisbech, coverage includes sites in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Lincolnshire e.g. Peterborough Cathedral, Ely Cathedral, Crowland Abbey, and the remains of Hunstanton Hall [burnt 1853].
The original negatives and prints are believed to be scattered through other archives including National Media Museum, Wisbech Museum and Peckover House (National Trust). In the 1970s the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England cooperated with the then owners [including Kodak] to make this material available.
The collection was acquired by The English Heritage Archive before 2014.
