Description

A collection of over 1400 photographic negatives and corresponding prints, and another set of lantern slides, taken by the photographer Herbert Edward Tuppen in the 1930s and 1940s, and donated to the archive by his sister. The collection covers a wide range of subject matter, including churches (mainly exteriors), ancient monuments, landscapes, vernacular architecture, and street scenes. There are also topographical views, bridges, windmills and other industrial subjects, alongside views of harbours and coastal scenes. The photographer seems to have had an interest in water transport, and there are a number of views showing sailing boats within the collection.

Geographically, the collection is mainly centred on the south-east, with Kent, Sussex, Suffolk, Surrey, Greater London, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Hampshire featuring. There are however views of other areas in the country, namely the Lake District, Devon, and Herefordshire, probably taken when Tuppen holidayed there.
