Description

2 portfolios of mounted prints from the 1920s depicting exteriors and general views of prominent buildings and churches in the Sevenoaks area in Kent and of harbours, streets, a mill and the coast in the Looe area in Cornwall.

315 prints by Turner (47 making up a file) of churches, cathedrals, castles, stately homes, abbeys/ priories and other historically and architecturally significant places around the country. These include places in Sussex, Essex, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Avon, Kent, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Buckinghamshire, Cornwall, Merseyside, North Yorkshire, Greater London and Surrey. Most of the prints date from circa 1980, with a number from the late 1960s and early 1970s, plus 1 of The Crown Inn at Chiddingfold from circa 1930. In addition to the prints there are 6 postcards by H.M. Allen of Tenby, Pembroke Castle and Manorbier Castle in Wales, taken late 19th/ early 20th century, which appear to have been collected by Turner.

Archival History

Received Via : Ann Turner Provenance : S B Turner (ARPS) was a plastics engineer and member of Loughton Camera Club. Most of the prints in this collection were exhibited in the 1970's at various South and Eastern photographic competitions.

The 315 prints were received in a number of brown envelopes with general locations written on them, some with question marks. The prints have been re-housed in archival boxes and the envelopes disposed of.

Also in the box of prints were 2 glass negatives by W. D. Clark which are now a collection in their own right (CLA02). Whether they are connected with Turner is unknown.
