Description

The collection contains 864 images of Plymouth, Devon and its suburbs collected by Ron Winram and Andrew Cluer as part of their research for the publication 'Plymouth and Plymothians' (1985).

The images are arranged into eleven folios. The folios are in two boxes. Folios in box 1 are labelled: streets 1 (89 items), streets 2 (85 items), buildings 1 (83 items), buildings 2 (72 items), people 1 (74 items), people 2 (92 items), and interior views (77 items). Folios in box 2 are labelled: harbour 1 (38 items) harbour 2 (73 items), shipping (77 items), transport (80 items), and large photos (24 items). The folios contain primarily original and copy photographic prints but there are also some postcards and press cuttings. Some of the images are annotated with their locations and 'Plymouth and Plymothians' enables locations of some of the unannotated images to be identified.

The main part of the collection is made up of images by the photographers J L P Duprez [d.1900] and Rugg Monk [d.1924] of Plymouth. There are also a small number of images of vessels in Devonport printed from early 1850s calotypes by Linneaus Tripe. The originals of some of the images can be found in institutions such as the National Maritime Museum and Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, who have digitised a selection from the Rugg Monk collection, some of which overlap with the prints in this collection.

The significance of the collection is that Winram and Cluer were the first people to systematically compile copies of the earliest known images of the city and to publish them.

Archival History

Over 850 copied photographs of Plymouth and suburbs deriving from research for the publication 'Plymouth and Plymothians' [1985] compiled by Ron Winram and Andrew Cluer who set up their own publishing company at Winram's antiquarian bookshop at 32 Rosemount Place, Aberdeen. High quality copies from original images or collections [1850s onwards] in Plymouth and elsewhere [including National Maritime Museum]. Credited photographers include J L P Duprez [d.1900] and Rugg Monk [d.1924] of Plymouth but the collection also includes images of vessels in Devonport printed from early 1850s calotypes by Linneaus Tripe. No online trace of the publishing company or the authors. EH assume reproduction rights if no other source is indicated on reverse of prints, although users should be referred to Plymouth archives if they wish to pursue images from the originals. Any further handlist or catalogue will have to closely compare this collection with the Plymouth publication in the NMR Library which will add locations for insufficiently annotated images. Very thorough visual documentation for a city where much has disappeared.
