Description

The collection comprises 33 black and white photographs showing views around Whitby, Scarborough and the surrounding villages including Danby, Staithes, Egton, Ugglebarnby, Robin Hood's Bay, Goathland, Glaisdale, Runswick Bay, Hinderwell, Lythe, Sneaton, Stanwick St John, Aldbrough St John, Westerdale and Newholm-cum-Dunsley. The prints, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, show churches, houses, farms, landmarks (including Whitby Abbey), coastal scenes, villagescapes, streetscapes etc.

Further examples are held by Whitby Museum/Literary & Philosophical Society.

Archival History

Provenance : Previously unidentified prints held as part of originals collection. Subsequently identified as the work of T Watson and classified as separate collection (1997). T Watson lived in Lythe, near Whitby. All prints have Victoria County History stamp on reverse. VCH probably purchased them 1920?, and subsequently passed them onto to the NBR. Photographs and line drawn copies appear in VCH North Yorkshire Volume II.
