Walsall opened it's first public library in 1800. By 1830 more space was required and St Matthew's Hall was purpose built to provide a reading room, news room and first floor gallery. High subscription costs led to a lack of members and the library was forced to close. From the mid 19th century until the 1990s it served as the County Court. It is now a public house, still known as St Matthew's Hall.
