Description

The factory at Winnington Works opened in 1873, after John Brunner and Ludwig Mond bought Winnington Hall and the estate in 1872. The factory produced alkali and, in time, Brunner Mond & Co Ltd became the world's largest producer of soda. In 1896 almost 3,000 workers were employed, growing to almost 4,000 in 1910. By 1910 housing, sports grounds, and a pavilion had been built on the estate for workers.
