Description

The cathedral was begun in 1083 by Simeon and completed by 1350, after which no major building occurred. The cathedral has an aisled nave with transepts and west porch, a central crossing with octagonal lantern, Lady Chapel and aisled chancel. Bishop West's (d. 1534) chapel was built between 1525 and 1533, and has a west entrance from the south aisle with wrought iron gates underneath a pointed arch with tiers of tracery and scrollwork above. Inside the chapel the walls have Renaissance panelling, the earliest in the cathedral, and the decoration is quieter than the exterior.
