Description

The monuments are adjacent to the Mayflower Steps, from which the Pilgrim Fathers are believed to have left England on the Mayflower in September 1620. The original memorial, a granite block engraved with 'Mayflower 1620', was moved from the roadway to its position in front of the portico in 1934, when the portico was erected. The memorial plaque housed by the portico dates from 1891. Other plaques have been placed in the walls of the West Pier during the 19th and 20th centuries, commemorating various departures, arrivals and anniversaries. The plaque has since been removed from the portico, through which can now be accessed a small platform protruding over the water.
