Description

The building dates from 1738 when it opened as the Welsh Charity School. It later became a public house and coffee rooms but by 1872 it housed the London Patriotic Club, an important radical workmen's club. From the 1890s through to the early 1920s it was home to the Twentieth Century Press, publishers of Socialist literature. The exiled Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin edited Iskra, his newspaper of Russian socialist emigrants, from here between1902-1903. The building became home to the Marx Memorial Library in 1933.
