This is a copy negative, created in 1986 from an original print of circa 1890, which is also held in this collection (see OP18665). 'Grove Hall Asylum' or 'Grove Hall Lunatic Asylum' opened in 1844. It had been established as a private workhouse in the early 1820s. In 1844 it became a Licensed House, or private establishment, run by Edward Byas. By 1879 it mainly treated former servicemen. The hospital closed in 1905. Grove Hall Park, a public park, now occupies the hospital site.
